Midway ISD Expands CTE Opportunities

Midway ISD students will have even more opportunities to explore future careers thanks to the addition of two new Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses approved by the Board of Trustees for the 2026–27 school year.

Advanced Culinary Arts will allow students to refine their culinary skills while participating in student-led catering projects at Midway High School. The program continues to grow in popularity and provides hands-on experience in professional food service and event management.

Practicum in Commercial Photography offers students real-world industry connections and opportunities to build professional portfolios, preparing them for careers in marketing, design, and visual communications.

“These courses give our students valuable, hands-on experience that connects classroom learning to real-world careers,” said Dr. Becky Odajima, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching & Learning. “We’re excited to see students explore their passions through these programs.”

Midway ISD offers a wide range of Career and Technical Education (CTE) opportunities at both the middle and high school levels. Through in-district courses and partnerships with the Greater Waco Advanced Manufacturing Academy (GWAMA) and Texas State Technical College (TSTC), students can explore pathways that align with 12 of the 14 National Career Clusters—from health science and engineering to business, education, and the arts.

CTE benefits every student, including those planning to attend college. Students involved in CTE are more engaged, graduate at higher rates, and are better prepared for both college and career success. These programs emphasize not only academic excellence but also employability and technical skills that open doors to future opportunities.

Each CTE program at Midway connects to a Career & Technical Student Organization (CTSO), extending learning beyond the classroom. These organizations help students apply their knowledge through leadership, teamwork, and competition at the state and national levels.

Active CTSOs and CTE organizations at Midway High School include:

  • BPA – Business Professionals of America
  • FCCLA – Family, Career and Community Leaders of America
  • HOSA – Future Health Professionals
  • FFA – Texas and National FFA
  • SkillsUSA
  • TAFE – Texas Association of Future Educators
  • Robotics
