Midway ISD Board Votes Unanimously to Close Speegleville Elementary

The Midway ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously Tuesday during a special called meeting to close Speegleville Elementary following the 2025–26 school year.

The decision follows more than a year of discussion, including review of enrollment trends, campus capacity, transportation considerations, financial factors, facility conditions, and community input.

Like many districts across the state and nation, Midway ISD continues to navigate declining birth rate trends and ongoing financial pressures, making long-term planning decisions essential to maintaining effective, high-quality learning environments for students.

Board President Susan Vick said the decision reflects the Board’s responsibility to ensure long-term stability and strong learning environments across the district.

“This was not a decision made lightly. We recognize the deep pride and history connected to Speegleville Elementary,” Vick said. “Our responsibility is to make thoughtful, forward-looking decisions that support students and position the district for continued excellence in the future.”

Students currently attending Speegleville will be rezoned to South Bosque Elementary and Woodway Elementary. Updated attendance zone maps and transportation details will be shared in the coming weeks.

Superintendent Dr. Chris Allen said the district’s focus now turns to transition planning.

“Our priority is ensuring a smooth and supportive transition for students, staff, and families,” Allen said. “We will communicate clearly and consistently as next steps are finalized.”

Transition planning will include additional communication about attendance zones and transportation, staff reassignments, events to honor Speegleville’s legacy, and welcoming events for students, families, and staff transitioning to South Bosque and Woodway Elementary.

Additional information will be shared as plans are finalized.
