MHS Addition Moves Forward About $3 Million Under Budget

Midway ISD’s planned addition to Midway High School is moving forward with a projected total cost of approximately $16.5 million — about $3 million below the project’s original $19.9 million budget.

At its Aug. 18 meeting, the Midway ISD Board of Trustees approved a Guaranteed Maximum Price of $13.7 million with Mazanec Construction for the project’s primary construction package.

The latest estimate represents additional savings since the district’s June bond update, when the total project cost was projected at approximately $19.3 million.

“We are now projecting the overall project at approximately $16.5 million while still delivering the addition our community approved,” Assistant Superintendent of Finance Wesley Brooks said. “Savings like these give the district options as we move through the bond program and continue evaluating costs across all projects.”

The $13.7 million Guaranteed Maximum Price, or GMP, establishes the maximum amount Midway ISD will pay Mazanec Construction for the work included in the construction package. It represents the largest portion of the project cost but does not include all expenses associated with the addition. The approximately $16.5 million total project estimate also accounts for design, professional services, equipment and other related costs.

The Midway High School addition, one of the major projects included in the voter-approved 2025 Bond Program, was originally budgeted at $19.9 million.

“From the beginning, we made a commitment to our community that we would deliver these projects responsibly and make every taxpayer dollar go as far as possible,” Superintendent Dr. Chris Allen said. “Bringing this project forward about $3 million below its original budget puts us in a strong position to continue delivering on the commitments we made to voters.”

Because the 2025 Bond established a maximum amount the district is authorized to issue, savings on individual projects give the district flexibility as the overall bond program progresses. The district could ultimately issue less debt, resulting in savings for taxpayers, or use available bond funds for additional eligible projects within the scope approved by voters.

The addition will provide new program and support space at Midway High School. Midway ISD will continue providing updates on construction progress, project timelines and expenditures as the 2025 Bond Program moves forward.
