Early Progress Data Shows Strong Start for Midway Students

Midway ISD students are off to a strong academic start this year, according to the district’s Beginning of Year (BOY) progress monitoring data presented to the Board of Trustees in October. The report, which reflects student achievement across reading and math, provides the first checkpoint in the district’s continuous academic growth monitoring system.

Midway uses three adaptive, research-based tools to track student progress and guide instruction: NWEA MAP Growth for reading, Tango LION for elementary math, and IXL Learning for secondary math and reading. Together, these assessments give teachers a clear picture of each student’s current skill level, allowing them to tailor instruction to meet individual needs and measure growth throughout the year.

“This data gives us an early pulse on how our students are performing and helps us identify both strengths and areas where we can accelerate growth,” said Dr. Becky Odajima, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. “By looking at progress trends year over year, we’re able to see how our instructional strategies are working and where we need to focus our support.”

In line with previous years, Midway’s early data indicates:

  • Reading performance remains steady or above national norms, with growth projections aligning with last year’s strong performance trends.
  • Math scores show continued improvement at several grade levels, particularly in foundational elementary skills assessed by the Tango LION tool.
  • Fewer students are entering the year significantly below grade level, suggesting effective summer learning interventions and smoother academic transitions.
  • Middle school students are demonstrating consistent growth trajectories, showing the district’s targeted focus on secondary readiness is paying off.

Administrators, specialists, and teachers will use this data to guide instruction before administering mid-year assessments later this winter. The mid-year data will provide a second benchmark to ensure every student stays on track toward end-of-year learning goals.

“As we move forward, our goal is not only to see strong achievement but strong growth for every student,” said Dr. Odajima. “The beginning of the year data shows that Midway students are well-positioned for continued success.”
