Bond in Action: Design Update on Midway High School Extra-Curricular Addition

Midway ISD trustees at their regular May meeting received a detailed design development update on the upcoming Midway High School extra-curricular addition and renovation project, one of the major projects included in the voter-approved 2025 bond program.

The project is designed to expand student activity space and support programs that have grown alongside the campus over the years, while also expanding instructional space. District leaders said previous additions at Midway High School increased academic capacity through science, fine arts, and Career & Technical Education expansions, but activity spaces had not kept pace with enrollment growth and increased student participation.

“This project is about creating space and opportunity for students,” Superintendent Dr. Chris Allen said. “Midway High School has continued to grow, and our extra-curricular programs have grown with it. These additions will help us better support students while bringing the campus more in line with comparable high schools across Texas.”

The approximately 23,000-square-foot addition will be located near the existing arena entrance and Multi-Purpose Activity Center (MAC) on the southwest side of campus.

Planned improvements include:

  • A new practice gym designed for volleyball and basketball with seating for approximately 175 spectators
  • New locker rooms for volleyball and wrestling programs
  • A mezzanine practice space for cheer
  • Updated varsity football locker room
  • Team meeting and conference spaces
  • Expanded coaches’ office areas
  • Renovations to existing locker rooms and training areas to improve functionality and student support spaces

The project also includes upgrades to the training room area, creating additional rehabilitation space, storage, taping stations, and treatment areas to better accommodate student needs.

Architectural renderings shared during the presentation show the addition designed to match the existing high school aesthetic, utilizing similar brick, concrete block, and exterior detailing to blend seamlessly with the current campus.

Construction is expected to occur in phases. Initial utility relocation and underground detention work is planned for summer 2026, with major construction beginning in fall 2026. The facility is expected to be complete and ready for student use by the start of the 2027-28 school year.

The current estimated total project cost is approximately $19.36 million, which is more than $500,000 under the voter-approved project budget.

District leaders emphasized the project is part of the broader 2025 bond package approved by Midway voters with no tax rate increase.
