Earlier this week, JoAnne Grubbs, one of Midway’s well-known substitute teachers, celebrated a milestone—her 90th birthday. And while she took that day off for a well-earned party, JoAnne said she’s far from finished doing what she loves: showing up for Midway kids.

For the past two years, JoAnne has been a steady, joyful presence across every Midway campus, with Midway Middle School becoming her most frequent stop. Before joining us, she spent her career teaching in Dallas, having retired from teaching 4-7th grade in Plano ISD, and now, with her grandsons close by in Waco—one of whom is Phillip Helberg of Helberg BBQ, a familiar favorite at our convocation lunch—she says subbing gives her purpose and a reason to stay active.
“It’s such a wonderful way to have something to do,” JoAnne said, smiling. “I love it, and I’m thankful I can still do it.”
Her dedication, warmth, and lifetime of experience make her a gift to our students and staff. We’re honored she chooses to spend her days with us at Midway.
Happy 90th birthday JoAnne—and thank you for the heart you bring to our schools. 💙
