Lauryn Kosel, a senior at Midway High School, was recognized last Tuesday, September 3, by Waco Mayor Jim Holmes as the City of Waco Female Athlete of the Year.
Kosel’s achievements in track and field have also earned her the title of Texas Amateur Athletic Federation’s (TAAF) Region 5 Female Athlete of the Year for 2024, a distinction that highlights her exceptional abilities and dedication.
Kosel, a standout sprinter and long jumper, has been competing in the Team Waco Summer Track and Field Program for the past two years. Specializing in the 100-meter, 200-meter, and long jump, she has become a key figure in the program, which is operated by the City of Waco Parks and Recreation Department. The program offers young athletes aged five to 18 the opportunity to train with college-level competitors at the Hart-Patterson Track and Field Complex and participate in weekly meets.
Kosel’s impressive performances this summer earned her multiple podium finishes at the TAAF Region 5 Championships, held in Waco. She placed second in the 100-meter, claimed first place in the 200-meter, and secured second place in the long jump.
Her consistent efforts throughout the summer, competing every Saturday, qualified her for the TAAF Games of Texas State Meet in Brownsville. At the state meet, she earned gold in the 100-meter, placed fourth in the 200-meter, and took home third in long jump.
“I was nominated by all the officials during the Team Waco Summer Track and Field Program,” Kosel said when asked about her selection for the City of Waco Female Athlete of the Year. She discovered her nomination at the beginning of August, leading to last week’s recognition by the mayor.
Her coach, Jordan Johnson, praised Kosel’s work ethic and perseverance, noting her consistent improvement and dedication over the years.
“We are proud to have Lauryn represent Midway Track and Field,” Johnson said. “Her accomplishments reflect her commitment to excellence, not only in athletics but also in her role as a leader among her peers.”
Brad Shelton, Midway’s Athletic Director, echoed those sentiments, celebrating Kosel’s impact both on and off the track.
“Lauryn embodies the spirit of hard work and determination,” Shelton said. “Her success is a testament to her focus and drive, and we couldn’t be more proud of her.”
