MHS Tennis Team Brings Home 21st Straight District Title

Head Coach Troy Simonek and the Midway High School Tennis team won their 21st consecutive District Championship this fall. In addition to their district title, Midway placed second in the regional finals.

This year started with almost 225 teams in 6A Team Tennis,” Coach Simonek said. “These Panthers fought all the way to the Elite Eight and left it all out on the court.”

Coach Simonek came to Midway in 2001 and led the team to win district every season since 2002. He has also won several awards during his time at Midway including the title of 2019 6A High School Coach of the Year from the Texas Tennis Coaches Association and 2021 National High School Coach of the Year from Universal Tennis Rating.

It takes more than just talent to win over two decades of district championships, which is why Coach Simonek helps his team maintain a simple focus on three key points: strive together, outwork their opponents and remember that the Panthers are a family.

“No matter what the result is, the team that loves each other the most always wins,” Coach Simonek said. “This team is special and it is a special thing to be a part of… for me and players.”

Congratulations to these student-athletes who were members of the 2022 varsity team!
