On the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, Midway High School’s Marine Corps JROTC brought students, staff and local first responders together for Unity Day—a student-led observance focused not only on remembering the past, but also on choosing how the next generation will respond.
The ceremony featured remarks from students, a musical performance by the Midway High School choir and artwork created by classes across the campus. MCJROTC cadets also compiled photographs and reflections from teachers, administrators and support staff into displays that will remain available for students to view.
Rather than center the event solely on a history that today’s students did not personally experience, organizers connected the unity demonstrated after September 11, 2001, with choices students can make today.
“We can’t change what happened that day, but we can choose what happens next,” said MCJROTC cadet Damon Fish. “One act of kindness matters. One act of courage matters. One act of service matters. Unity starts with one person, then another and another, until it eventually becomes a community.”
Students were challenged to complete at least one meaningful act of kindness during the following week—from thanking a teacher or helping a classmate to volunteering, donating or offering forgiveness. Information about local volunteer opportunities will also be shared with students.
Community first responders joined students for the event, reinforcing the day’s message of service and connection beyond the school campus.
“We are one school. We are one community,” Fish told those gathered. “Today, we remember as one and commit to serving as one.”
Through Unity Day, Midway High School’s MCJROTC gave a new generation a meaningful way to honor September 11: by strengthening the community they share, one act of service at a time.
