HB2 Update - Your Voice Made a Difference

Last week, the Senate Education Committee held a hearing on their committee substitute for HB 2—legislation that will impact the future of public school funding in Texas.

After hours of testimony, the bill remains pending, with no vote taken. Thanks to strong public engagement across the state, the Senate has paused to take a closer look at HB 2. Your voices are being heard—and that matters!

We want to start with gratitude. Chairman Brad Buckley and the Texas House have put forth a serious plan—one that directs much-needed dollars into our public schools. The House leadership reflects the urgency of the situation, and we want to thank Chairman Brad Buckley, Representative Pat Curry and the House of Representatives for delivering a proposal that keeps public education in the conversation.

But this conversation isn’t over. Governor Abbott has made it clear: he expects legislation that includes both a voucher provision and effective funding for public education. The House delivered. Now it’s the Senate’s turn.

Here’s what you can do right now:

  1. Thank your Texas House member—especially Chairman Buckley—for his leadership.
  2. Contact your state senator and members of the Senate K-16 Education Committee and urge them to meet the moment. Tell them to honor the governor’s charge and fund our public schools.
  3. Keep sharing updates like this so your voice continues to be heard.

Every voice still counts. The Senate is hearing from communities across Texas, and they need to keep hearing from us. Let’s make sure public education remains a priority in any legislation moving forward.
