Prekindergarten

Beginning June 3, 2024, if your child meets one of the eligibility requirements, you may print and fill out the prekindergarten application and bring it with you to your campus for review, along with the required documentation. After eligibility is determined, you may complete the online enrollment.

90% of human brain development happens before age 5. In other words, waiting until kindergarten to start teaching our kids is already too late. By enrolling your child in Midway ISD's Prekindergarten program, you give them the gift of a brighter future. As adults, they also end up earning higher incomes, on average, than similar students who do not enroll in Prekindergarten.

Studies show that kids who attend Prekindergarten are:

  • 3.5x more likely to be ready for kindergarten
  • More likely to succeed in school
  • More likely to go to college
  • Less likely to drop out
  • Less likely to become a teen parent
  • Less likely to be arrested for a violent crime
Who is Eligible?

A child must be at least three years of age by September 1 of the school year and fit at least one of the following criteria:

  • Be unable to speak and comprehend the English language
  • Be educationally disadvantaged, which means a student eligible to participate in the national free or reduced-price lunch program
  • Be homeless, as defined by 42 United States Code (U.S.C.) Section 1143a, regardless of the residence of the child, of either parent of the child, or of the child's guardian or other person having lawful control of the child
  • Be the child of an active duty member of the armed forces of the United States, including the state military forces or a reserve component of the armed forces, who is ordered to active duty by proper authority; or is the child of a member of the armed forces of the United States, including the state military forces or a reserve component of the armed forces, who was injured or killed while serving on active duty
  • Be in, or have been in, the conservatorship of the Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) following an adversary hearing held as provided by Section 262.201, Family Code
  • Be the child of a person eligible for the Star of Texas Award as a peace officer under Section 3106.002, Government Code; a firefighter under Section 3106.003, Government Code; or an emergency medical first responder under Section 3106.005, Government Code.

Learn more at Texas Education Agency: Eligibility for Prekindergarten.
