Fine Arts Programs Continue to Shine

At the June school board meeting, Director of Fine Arts Darrell Umhoefer gave an update on the district's robust Fine Arts program, highlighting significant achievements and ongoing facility upgrades.

In recognition of a consistent commitment to excellence, the district received the National Association of Music Merchants Best Communities for Music Education Designation for the 15th year in a row. This honor points to the remarkable success achieved by Midway Fine Arts programs in the 2022-2023 school year with more than 500 students receiving awards for superior individual achievement.

Highlights from the school year include the first-ever middle school musical, Texas VASE gold medal winner and state qualifiers, Thespians national qualifiers, TMEA All-State, All-Area, All-Region, and UIL Sweepstakes for middle and high school band, choir, and orchestra ensembles, and One Act Play advancement to area. Dance was also made available at the middle school level for the first time this year and the program saw remarkable growth.

Throughout the school year, the district hosted 55 events and performances in the Performing Arts Center and High School Theatre with an additional 180 rehearsal and preparation days.

In addition, 2019 bond funds were used to complete the Performing Arts Center (PAC) stage renovation this year, including updated rigging, curtains, electrical, and lighting work to bring it up to date with current code, and equipment updates have made state-of-the-art live streaming of concerts and performances possible, allowing families and community members who cannot attend in person to enjoy these events. Renovations are also currently underway in the Midway Middle School fine arts wing aiming to create an environment equitable to River Valley.

Midway Fine Arts impacts students distinct-wide in numerous disciplines, providing a full range of fine arts offerings for all students, and the recognition received this year and focus on facility improvements demonstrates the district's commitment to providing a well-rounded education for all students.
