Assistive Technology (AT)

Assistive technology (AT) refers to items, equipment, and technology which help to maximize student’s strengths and help compensate for weaknesses caused by their disability. Assistive Technology includes any service that directly assists a student with a disability in the selection, acquisition, or use of an assistive technology device. Assistive Technology ensures that a child with a disability receives a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) and enables progress toward his/her educational goals while significantly contributing to a child’s independence, self-expression, and self-esteem.

All ARD/IEP Committees are required by federal regulation CFR 300.324(a)(2)(v) to consider the student's need for assistive technology (AT) devices and services in the development of the IEP. AT devices can range from a simple pencil grip to a complex communication device.
