STAAR in a Pandemic: What Midway Students Experienced
Like everything else in 2020-2021, the STAAR exam experience was an unprecedented challenge to work through. Our Midway staff pulled off some creative approaches to difficult challenges including:
This year's STAAR scores will not count toward district or campus accountability, or for students' grade advancement. (Seniors are still required to pass End of Course exams to graduate.)
This was the first year of 100% online testing in MISD. All districts will be required to test online in the future, so MISD strategized that a year when STAAR does not count toward accountability is a good time to experience the new testing platform.
The STAAR testing online system crashed statewide on Day 1 of testing. The testing windows were longer than in the past, so MISD was able to spread out testing to benefit students, limiting the impact of the crash.
This was the first year for this year's fourth graders to take state exams, so comparing to previous years' scores is doing so without the advantage of practice and experience.
Likewise, it was the first year for online testing for many students, which also impacts "apples to apples" comparisons.
Students learning at home virtually were required to test in-person on campus. Campuses ran creative scheduling including home learning days to allow for adequate physical distancing due to COVID-19 concerns.
