• Emergent Bilingual

Midway ISD offers two language programs for Emergent Bilingual Students:
    • English as a Second Language (ESL) is a program of choice for students whose primary language is not English. The ESL program is intensive English language instruction provided by trained teachers in effective language acquisition strategies. Students qualify for ESL based on results from an oral language proficiency test and standardized achievement tests.  ESL is offered at all 11 Midway ISD campuses.
    • The Bilingual program is offered to students in grades PK-4 whose native language is Spanish. The Bilingual program will not be offered at Hewitt Elementary in the 2022-2023 school year.  Students who qualify for Bilingual services will receive support through an Alternative Language Program. All students will receive classroom instruction from a Bilingual-certified or ESL-certified teacher through an ESL program.
