Midway Middle school uses several programs to combat bullying including our district"s Student Safety and Wellness website under the parent tab at www.midwayisd.org
All of our 7th grade students are required to take a Teen Leadership class in which they read, Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey. While reading this book, teachers and students discuss tough issues and life-changing decisions they face. This book teaches students how to improve their self-esteem, build friendships, resist peer pressure, achieve their goals, and much more.
Our school is also part of the Safe and Civil Schools program. Safe and Civil schools help educators develop better behavior management strategies in the school environment that help alleviate bullying among students.
Our library carries several books that students can check out about bullying.
Staff members are present in the hallways during all class changes and in the cafeteria during lunch and after school. One of the best ways for educators to combat bullying is just to be present with students.
Students are also encouraged to tell a teacher, counselor, parent, or friend if they are being bullied.
A new program in effect this year is the FBI’s Safe Online Surfing Internet Challenge. This free online program is sponsored by the FBI. All Middle school students have access to this computer program and use it to play games and learn about how to be safe when they use electronic devices such as internet, email, messaging, Facebook, and they also learn online etiquette.
Midway counselors use individual and group counseling with students who feel they are being bullied. Pamphlets are also available that teach students how to deal with bullies and what to do if they are being bullied.
Midway Middle school also promotes the Federal Government’s official site to help stop bullying. It is www.stopbullyingnow.hrsa.gov/ This site offers several resources for parents, teachers and students to help us learn what bullying is and how to combat it--in the form of online videos, games, and puzzles.
There are many resources available to combat bullying in schools, and Midway uses a combination of these to help students stay safe and secure at school and also when they are using electronic devices at home.
