What is SHAC?

  • School Health Advisory Council

A School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) is a group appointed by the school district to serve at the district level. Members of the SHAC come from different areas of the community and from within the school district. The majority of members must be parents who are not employed by the district. Texas law (Texas Education Code, Title 2, Subtitle F, Chapter 28, Subchapter A, §28.004) requires the establishment of a SHAC for every school district. SHACs are required to meet at least four times each year.

The Texas Department of State Health Services has developed the School Health Advisory Council: A Guide for Texas School Districts [PDF]. This guide provides school staff and community members basic information about the value of SHACs to create a healthy school environment for students.

The School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) is an advisory group comprised of individuals who represent segments of the community. The group acts collectively to provide advice to MISD on aspects of the school district's health program. Generally, the members of SHAC are appointed by the Board of Trustees. Texas law (Texas Education Code, Title 2, Subtitle F, Chapter 28, Subchapter A, §28.004) requires the establishment of a SHAC for every school district, and SHACs are required to meet at least four times each year. The SHAC has a variety of roles addressing all components of a comprehensive school health program. The components include:

    • Health and Safety Policies and Environment
    • Health Education
    • Physical Education
    • Nutrition Services
    • Health Services
