What is SHAC?

  • The School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) is an advisory group comprised of individuals who represent segments of the community. The group acts collectively to provide advice to MISD on aspects of the school district's health program. Generally, the members of SHAC are appointed by the Board of Trustees. Texas law (Texas Education Code, Title 2, Subtitle F, Chapter 28, Subchapter A, §28.004) requires the establishment of a SHAC for every school district, and SHACs are required to meet at least four times each year. The SHAC has a variety of roles addressing all components of a comprehensive school health program. The components include:

    • Health and Safety Policies and Environment
    • Health Education
    • Physical Education
    • Nutrition Services
    • Health Services
    • Counseling, Psychological, and Social Services
    • Health Promotion for Staff
    • Family and Community Involvement
