Objectives: 
Students will be able to compose a paragraph about an animal they have researched.

Procedures:
Before bringing students to the lab, the teacher or lab assistant should download the template and pictures.  Students should have basic knowledge of an animal they have previously researched.  You may use the following website for first grade appropriate research.

  1. Double click on the template
  2. Highlight "Animal" and type the name of your animal.  Notice this needs to be typed on the bottom of the first card and the top of the second.
  3. Click next to "Habitat:" and type information about the animals habitat
  4. Click next to "Diet" and "Fun Fact" to complete the information
  5. Highlight "My Name" at the bottom of the second card and type your name.
  6. Go to File on the menu bar and choose Save As
  7. Name your document and save but do not close
  8. Go to File and choose Open
  9. Navigate to the animal pictures page 
  10. Click on the picture of your animal
  11. Go to Edit on the menu bar and choose Copy
  12. Go to Window on the menu bar and choose your document
  13. Click the arrow on the tool bar
  14. Go to Edit on the menu bar and choose Paste
  15. Use the black handles on the corner of the picture to resize it and drag it to the appropriate place on the trading card
  16. Go to Edit on the menu bar and choose Select All
  17. Go to Edit and choose Copy
  18. Go to Edit and choose Paste
  19. There should be two cards on your screen, drag the copy under the original 
  20. Print
  21. Students may cut out there cards and glue or tape them together so that they look like a trading card.  There should be one card to keep and one to share.

Assess cards for appropriate content and picture

Work in small groups to create cards

Extensions:
Card template can be used for a variety of content areas, such as famous people, inventors, plants, and dinosaurs.
